Tips For Planting Blackberry Bushes

If you have found yourself on this page you probably have already decided you want to grow blackberry bushes. I will then assume I can jump over the part where I try to convince you how amazing blackberries taste right off the bush, and how they are healthy for you as well. Great, now that part is cleared up lets discuss how to start your blackberries!

Prep time:

First, off you want to get set up right from the beginning so pick a sunny spot in your garden where you have enough space for these bushes to grow. Beware they will really take over a space quickly.

Secondly, if you have an elevated spot for your bushes that's even better, drainage is helpful for healthy roots. If you don't have a hill or elevated area I would suggest building up a small mound so when you plant them the bottom of their roots is about level with the rest of you garden. (This is not 100% required but will help them be happy in the long run)

Third, prep item is to dig the soil much deeper than you need and add compost or a nutrient rich soil. By adding loose dirt below where you will put your roots it will make the roots easily be able to grow down into the earth.

fourth, place your plant into hole and cover with dirt, and or compost. Then put down some form of weed barrier. I love using newspaper, its free and a few sheets are plenty thick to prevent weeds for the year. The problem with newspaper is it doesn't stay down itself so plan to add mulch or straw on top. Of course you can do just mulch or straw by themselves. If using newspaper make sure you water right near the base of your plant because the water will have a harder time absorbing through the paper and will end up running away from the plant. I also use cardboard boxes sometimes but they too need to be weighed down.

lastly water well until roots are well established. When the plant begins to fruit you will also need to water every few days or it may decrease your fruit production. If you added mulch that will help keep roots moist on the hot summer days, and you won't need to water as often.
